So, here's something that only happens when you live in a foreign country:
Monday I had a lesson with a highschool senior. This happens in my apt while Estelle (theoretically) is taking a nap.
Having just returned after being away for 3 weeks, the cupboards are bare as you might imagine. Not much to eat and nothing interesting to drink either: No bottled water, no perrier, no juice. I was sick of drinking water so decided to spice things up by taking a lesson from Thomas' cousins whom I had met whilst on vacation. The French love something called "sirop" - you got it: syrup. This product comes in all flavors imaginable. It is packaged in tin canisters or sometimes glass bottles and you pour some into the bottom of a glass and then add water - eureka, instant sugar drink. It's basically the new Koolaid of the 21st century. Just in liquid form. Of course you can make it as sweet or as diluted as you want.
I personally have never been tempted by the stuff, but I had a lack-of-sugar headache and thought I'd better get some energy for my lesson. I knew that we had a bottle of some "sirop" stuff that Thomas had bought once. The flavor was "cassis", which means "currant". So into the glass I poured a inch or more and added ice and water and frankly was quite proud of myself and was feeling TRES french.
The doorbell rings, in walks my student Sophie, and we sit down for our weekly attack of the English language. About 5 minutes later I felt this strange warm sensation, vaguely familiar but relatively unidentifiable. After a few more minutes I realized that feeling I couldn't at first put my finger on was that I felt drunk! I stared at my glass, excused myself into the kitchen under the pretense of getting a kleenex and pulled out that bottle - upon closer inspection of the label, I saw "15%".
Note to self: Creme de Cassis and Sirop de Cassis are not the same thing. One would think that my days of bartending from 11 years ago would have registered, but at a quick glance when you are preparing to squeeze in a lesson and your infant is sleeping and there's nothing in the house, you don't expect that you are making yourself a cocktail at 11:30 am. Bottoms up!
